The mind likes to categorize, label and judge. If we buy into these fragmented perceptions of self and others, then we get trapped in a repetitive cycle of stories that create conflict and division. As you learn to still the mind, it allows for greater awareness of the feeling in your heart space that is always there. Learn to operate from this place of what the heart is feeling instead of what the mind is thinking. Trust and surrender to this feeling. This is the key to your conscious evolution.
All positive and negative emotions are distortions of love energy. Underneath all emotion is feeling. It is a loving energy/presence that is always there. It is the nature of who you are. Learning to connect with this love/energy feeling requires that the mind be reasonably still. When thoughts repeat with positive or negative judgement it changes the quality of this love energy feeling into emotions.
Initially, emotional energy is much more intense in sensation than the feeling of love energy because what your mind focuses on, grows. As you repeat certain narratives in your mind the corresponding sensations of those narratives increase in your body. Your awareness is then drawn to the intense physical sensation of the emotional energy instead of the ever-present love energy that is the substrate of the emotion. As long as the mind is busy (and it really likes to be busy!) your awareness will be continually drawn towards the intense effects of the emotions in your body thereby making it difficult to connect with the feeling of love energy.
All emotions are on a spectrum that progress from a slight distortion of love energy to a very strong distortion of love energy. As the mind becomes more still, your awareness of the ever present love energy underneath it all starts to arise. When you learn what this feels like then you have a measure of stillness that allows you to know when distortions in your mind and body first arise.

Hesitation-Doubt-Insecurity-Worry-Anxiety-Panic
Irritation-Frustration-Anger-Rage
Indifference-Procrastination-Boredom-Apathy
Each of these are in order from mildest to strongest distortion. If self awareness is low, you are intensely focused on something else, or in fight or flight, then you will not notice as these emotional distortions increase in your body as the mind continues to repeat the belief on a conscious or subconscious level. At some point the body cannot contain the emotional energy so it forces your action/expression in a way that temporarily dissipates the energy. This provides relief for the body in the short term, but as long as the underlying narrative continues in your mind then the cycle of emotional build up will continue to repeat and express beyond your control. This cycle continues until the life situation will usually resolve itself in a very painful way. It does not have to be this way.
When you are able to practice and build stillness in your being then you can feel the effects of the emotion in your body in a subtle form. It is at these subtle stages of distortion that the energy is easiest to express, channel or transmute. This keeps you in your center and out of the strongly charged state of emotional polarity. From this place of stillness, you will be more in control of your thoughts and emotions as they arise and you are better able to discern their cause and effect. In the end, the more still your mind becomes, the more conscious control you will have over your actions.
As you build inner stillness, the feeling of the ever-present love energy becomes stronger so you can reconnect with it when you have come out of balance, or keep the connection strong despite the world around you being out of balance. When you learn to hold this feeling from the heart space then it becomes your way. You are now moving out of emotional polarity and into conscious unity. But it all starts with stillness.
